Trump could have lifetime ‘peace board’ chairmanship – Bloomberg

Skeptics say the initiative overstates its mandate to fix Gaza and includes dubious funding mechanisms

US President Donald Trump could retain the chairmanship of his proposed ‘Board of Peace’ for life, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing an anonymous US official.

The panel is intended to help implement a US-mediated peace agreement in Gaza under a UN Security Council mandate.

However, its draft charter, reviewed by Bloomberg and other outlets, suggests that the Trump administration seeks broader international powers. Trump has indicated that the board could try to supersede the UNSC, arguing that the UN “has never lived up to its potential.”

The possibility of lifetime leadership “is the latest wrinkle” in the initiative, Bloomberg said. Previous reports indicated that panel members would be required to pay regular fees of at least $1 billion, with funds directly controlled by the chair.

The White House has named several proposed panel members, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff, without specifying whether their roles would be private or representing the US. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and others are also on the list.

Several nations, including France, have refused to support the board in its proposed form, drawing criticism from Trump, who plans to launch it officially at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday.

Russia has confirmed that it received an invitation for President Vladimir Putin to sit on the panel and said it was analyzing the details.

Trump has also alarmed European NATO members with his renewed push to acquire Greenland from Denmark, claiming the island is essential for US national security and will become American territory “the easy way or the hard way.”

The escalating dispute has derailed the intentions of European leaders that back Ukraine to use the Davos gathering to lobby Trump on Kiev’s behalf. Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky canceled his trip to Davos – reportedly after learning that an $800 billion reconstruction scheme would not be signed there.
