ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1431 Hints, Clues And Answer For Tuesday, May 20thBy Erik Kain

It’s Odin’s Day, which means one thing and one thing only: Wordle Wednesday is upon us! This means you get to solve an extra riddle, brain-teaser or logic puzzle before proceeding to today’s Wordle. Since I’m abroad, traveling today into the Scottish highlands, I thought today’s riddle should reflect the local culture. Besides, it’ll make things a wee bit more challenging. Here’s today’s bonnie wee riddle:

Come a riddle, come a riddle, come a rote, tote, tote,

A wee, wee man in a red, red coat.

A stave in his haund, an a bane in his throat.

Come a riddle, come a riddle, come a rote, tote, tote.

What am I?

If you think you know, shoot me a message on Twitter, Instagram, Bluesky or Facebook.. I’ll post the answer in tomorrow’s Wordle guide. Now let’s solve this Wordle!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

SPARE was a strong opening guess today, leaving me with two green boxes and just 20 remaining solutions. I was a little uncertain how to proceed. I really couldn’t pick a second word, and I was agonizing over it, well, AGONY popped into my head and I thought “why not?” Lucky for me, this slashed the remaining options down to just two: ALARM or AWARD. I flipped a coin and got lucky. Thank goodness.

Competitive Wordle Score

I’ve been on the losing side of my contest with the Bot for a few days now, so I’m glad to at least get the tie even if tying is worth zero points. We each get 1 point for guessing in three, which maintains our May gap:

Erik: 13 points

Wordle Bot: 17 points

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “alarm” comes from the Italian phrase “all’arme!” or “to arms!” which was used to rouse soldiers for battle. This in turn comes from Latin “arma” or “weapons” and entered French as “alarme” before finding its way into English in the 14th-15th century. Eventually the word came to mean more than simply a call to arms, broadening to also refer to devices and systems and more general warnings.
