Welcome back, oh thou crossword-solvers. It’s another gorgeous lazy Sunday and I hope you’re able to take full advantage of the lovely weather, assuming where you are is experiencing lovely weather, that is.
I have a TV series recommendation that I think will appeal specifically to those of us who are puzzle-inclined. Ludwig is a new BBC series that just came out on BritBox. It’s about a master puzzle-setter who finds himself impersonating a police detective and solving murders. You can read my review of the series here. It’s absolutely delightful. And be sure to check out my latest streaming guide for all the other shows and movies out this weekend. Now let’s solve this Mini Crossword!
The NYT Mini is a smaller, quicker, more digestible, bite-sized version of the larger and more challenging NYT Crossword, and unlike its larger sibling, it’s free-to-play without a subscription to The New York Times. You can play it on the web or the app, though you’ll need the app to tackle the archive.

Today’s Mini
This was a bit of a tricky Mini Crossword, truth be told. It would have been a lot easier if I had even the slightest clue about Women’s World Cup facts, but I had no idea so 1-ACROSS remained blank. Fortunately, I knew the Napoleon was exiled (twice!) and that the air in a hookah lounge was smoky. I also knew that refried beans are most often made with pinto beans, though sometimes black beans are used and honestly you could use other types if you were so inclined. It took me a bit before I tried out JESTS for “joking remarks” and from here everything fell into place. SINEW, TOTAL and finally JAPAN and all the DOWN words were filled in as I went. Good thing, too. Spring ALEAK is kind of goofy and “afresh” is a very bad clue for NEWLY. I’m wagging my finger on this one.
