‘This Was a Failure’: Sen. John Fetterman Apologizes to Those Hurt by Democrat Government Shutdown

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) said Sunday the Democrat government shutdown should never have happened and reiterated that he tried to help end it multiple times.

Writing in a post on X, Fetterman said, “After 40 days as a consistent voice against shutting our government down, I voted YES for the 15th time to REOPEN.”

“I’m sorry to our military, SNAP recipients, gov workers, and Capitol Police who haven’t been paid in weeks. It should’ve never come to this. This was a failure,” he concluded:

Senate Democrats caved on government funding Sunday and as a result got zero in return, Breitbart News reported.

“Eight Senate Democrats voted with 42 Republicans Sunday night on a procedural vote to allow a continuing resolution (CR) funding the government to advance,” the article read, adding that Democrats had overpromised results but are coming out of the situation with nothing.

“Democrat Sens. Maggie Hassan (NH), Jeanne Shaheen (NH), Dick Durbin (IL), Jacky Rosen (NV), and Tim Kaine (D-VA) supported the procedural vote. They joined Sens. Catherine Cortez-Masto (D-NM), Angus King (I-ME), and John Fetterman (D-PA), who had previously voted to allow the House-passed CR to advance,” the outlet noted.

Social media users were quick to respond to Fetterman’s post, with conservative activist Scott Presler writing, “Thank you for not being a part of Chuck Schumer’s shutdown.”

Another user told Fetterman, “Its time to switch parties brother,” while someone else said, “You turned out to be one of the more principled Members in your party and have gained much respect from my side because of it.”

In late October, Fetterman said he felt “dismayed” that his party was “playing chicken” with food security when it came to the shutdown, a move that essentially blocked Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from being distributed as it dragged on, per Breitbart News.

Fetterman later apologized for fellow Democrats who could not get their “shit” together to reopen the government.
