Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King is looking to keep its box office crown with no big newcomers vying for business in theaters this weekend.

Mufasa: The Lion King got off to a slow start in its opening weekend Dec. 20-22 with a No. 2 finish at the North American box office behind Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

However, the prequel to the 2019 live-action remake of The Lion King found its footing over the five-day Christmas weekend box office to seize the top spot.

Deadline projects that Mufasa: The Lion King will earn $23.8 million from 3,925 theaters this weekend to finish at No. 1 for the second consecutive week. If the estimate holds, it will boost the film’s domestic take to $168.6 million through Sunday.

With no major new releases this weekend, a batch of recent releases were battling Mufasa for the box office crown.

The film’s closest competitor is Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is projected by Deadline to earn $21.2 million from 3,746 venues this weekend for a No. 2 finish.

If the projection for the Paramount Pictures release holds, it will up the film’s running domestic tally to $187.5 million.

Audiences Still Under Spell Of ‘Nosferatu’ At The Box Office

Deadline projects that director Robert Eggers’ vampire thriller Nosferatu will take the No. 3 spot at the weekend box office, earned $13.2 million from 3,132 North American theaters.

If the estimate holds up, it will boost the Focus Features horror flick’s running North American tally to $69.4 million.

Disney’s Moana 2 is projected to earn $112.4 million this weekend from 3,345 theaters for a No. 3 finish. If the estimate holds up, it will up Moana 2’s running tally to $425.5 million through Sunday, Deadline reports.

Eyeing the No. 5 slot is Universal Pictures’ Wicked, which Deadline projects will earn $10.2 million from 3,287 venues.

Should the tally hold, it will boost the tally of the big-screen adaptation of the classic Broadway musical to $450.7 million.

Wicked, which opened in theaters nationwide on Nov. 22, debuted on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Dec. 31.
