The reboot of Wolf Man appears to be no match for Mufasa: The Lion King at the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend box office.
Released by Universal Pictures—the studio behind such monster movie classics as Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, Bride of Frankenstein and of course, The Wolf Man—director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man is projected by Deadline to earn $10.5 million through Sunday and $12 million through the Martin Luther King Jr. Day four-day holiday weekend.
A R-rated horror thriller starring Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott, Wolf Man opened Friday in 3,354 North American theaters.
Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, meanwhile, is looking to recapture the weekend box office crown a week after it was dethroned by Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.
Per Deadline, Mufasa: The Lion King is projected to earn $12 million through Sunday and $16 million through the four-day MLK holiday weekend. If the estimate holds it will boost Mufasa’s running domestic tally to $210.3 million since its Dec. 20, 2024, opening.
Debuting at No. 2 is Sony Pictures Entertainment’s comedy One of Them Days, starring Keke Palmer and SZA. Per Sony, One of Them Days is projected to make $12 million to $12.5 million in its opening Friday-Sunday frame and $14 million to $15 million for the four-day MLK holiday weekend.
‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ Hangs Tough In Top 5
Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 3—which opened at No. 1 in its debut weekend Dec. 20-22—is still holding strong in the domestic box office top five.
Per Deadline, the film is looking at a No. 4 finish with a three-day domestic box office take of $8 million and a four-day holiday weekend haul of $10.4. Should the estimates hold, it will boost the live-action and animated movie hybrid’s running domestic tally to $218.2 million.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is playing in 3,306 North American theaters.
Falling to No. 5 after opening at No. 1 last weekend in Lionsgate’s Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Deadline projects the film will earn $7.35 million Friday through Sunday and $9 million through the holiday weekend. If the estimates hold, it will up Den of Thieves 2’s running domestic tally to $28.5 million.
Dropping out of the domestic box office top five since its Christmas Day opening is Nosferatu, director Robert Eggers’ remake of the 1922 horror movie classic.
