DAYTON, OHIO – MARCH 19: Head Coach Sean Miller of the Xavier Musketeers celebrates after defeating … More
Texas has fired head men’s basketball coach Rodney Terry and will replace him with Xavier coach Sean Miller, according to reports.
Cedric Golden of the Austin-American Statesman was first to report the news.
Ironically, Miller led Xavier to an 86-80 victory over Terry and Texas in the NCAA Tournament First Four last week.
Miller, 56, is 487-196 for his career covering two stints at Xavier sandwiched around one at Arizona.
He has been to four Elite Eights, but never reached a Final Four.
Xavier finished 22-12, 13-7 in the Big East this season.
Multiple reports on Sunday indicated Terry was out.
His buyout is “roughly $5.4 million, plus whatever is remaining on the respective contracts of his staff,” per beat writer Josh Newman of LoneStarLive.com.
“I am so appreciative to have served The University of Texas and our men’s basketball program for 13 seasons,” Terry said in a statement. It was a dream of mine to be the head coach of the Longhorns, and I’ve been able to live that dream. I want to thank all of our coaches and current and former players who not only helped us win a lot of games, but more importantly represented this great university in a first-class manner. Thank you to Longhorn Nation, our student section ‘The Corral,’ and all of our wonderful donors and supporters who have been consistently great to me and our program. I’ll forever be a Longhorn.”
Terry, 56, went 62-37 in three seasons at Texas after replacing Chris Beard in 2022. This year’s team went 19-16, 6-12 in the SEC, and lost in the First Four to Xavier.
He previously coached at UTEP and Fresno State.
Texas is the latest high-major job to turn over, with Indiana and Virginia recently naming new coaches. Minnesota, Iowa and Villanova are among the jobs still open.
The NCAA transfer portal opens Monday.
