March in Texas can feel like any season of the year. The state has recorded temperatures as cold as -6 degrees (Dalhart, 1960) and as hot as 100 degrees, a feat several cities have experienced over the years. One day might bring snow flurries, while the next calls for sunscreen.

In 1922, Lubbock saw the most dramatic temperature swing for the month, with a difference of 85 degrees. In just a few weeks, temperatures shifted from subzero cold at the start of the month to fall-like weather, then quickly surged to the warmth of late spring.

Fortunately, this month is expected to be a bit milder than the extremes we’ve seen over the years, but don’t be surprised if March weather still catches you off guard.

  • Coldest: -3°F (1948)

    • Temperature difference: 84°F (from -3°F on March 3 to 81°F on March 24)

  • Hottest: 94°F (1971)

    • Temperature difference: 84°F (from 10°F on March 3 to 94°F on March 27)

Austin

  • Coldest: 18°F (1948)

    • Temperature difference: 72°F (from 18°F on March 12 to 90°F on March 30)

  • Hottest: 98°F (1971)

    • Temperature difference: 70°F (from 28°F on March 4 to 98°F on March 28)

Dallas-Fort Worth

  • Coldest: 10°F (1943)

    • Temperature difference: 76°F (from 10°F on March 3 to 86°F on March 15)

  • Hottest: 96°F (1991)

El Paso
