Getty ImagesTaylor Swift has long ranked as the most successful musical artist in the world. In 2024, she continued her reign thanks largely to the success of her album The Tortured Poets Department, which has been named the biggest album of the year. These facts were clear before the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) released its annual lists of the biggest and bestselling in the global music industry, but now Swift’s title has been confirmed yet again.
The singer-songwriter ends up on top of every list published by the IFPI, as she was the top act around the planet and The Tortured Poets Department was the most-consumed, most-streamed, bestselling, and top title on vinyl throughout the entire world.
Nobody could compete with the superstar when looking at the numbers, but Swift’s dominance is especially notable when it comes to selling wax records. The Tortured Poets Department was far and away the bestselling vinyl album around the world in 2024. According to the IFPI, the set sold 2.22 million copies on wax. Hers was the only effort to pass the one million purchase-mark last year.
Swift managed to outsell her closest competitor more than three times over. Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft sold 612,000 copies on vinyl since its release in the spring of 2024.
Leading the charge by as large a margin as she does would have been enough to certify Swift as the biggest winner when it comes to vinyl, but the The Tortured Poets Department is not her only bestseller. According to the IFPI’s list, the Grammy champion claims five of the 10 bestselling releases on wax all around the globe last year.
Swift enjoys a winning streak, as she fills Nos. 5 through 7 with previous releases. 1989 (Taylor’s Version) moved 362,000 copies, Midnights hit 321,000, and Folklore. managed 315,000 sales. Swift rounds out her quintet of top 10 bestsellers on the IFPI’s global vinyl albums ranking with Lover. Her project, which is now more than half a decade old, still managed to sell 297,000 copies on vinyl around the world last year alone.
Swift almost occupied six of the spaces inside the top 10 on the list, but misses out on doing so by just one slot. Evermore, the sister project to Folklore, sold 253,000 copies on vinyl around planet Earth in the last year. That puts it in eleventh place, and the singer only missed out on adding to her collection of top 10s by a few thousand copies.
Swift is the only musician to appear on the 20-spot ranking more than once. The Tortured Poets Department was so successful, it outsold the rest of the titles that appear inside the top five combined.
