The U.S. State Department officially removed Syria from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list, and delisted al-Qaeda offshoot Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) group, on Monday, completing a process President Donald Trump announced in July.
The change ends a 47-year tenure on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list for Syria that began under the dictatorship of Hafez Assad, the father of ousted dictator Bashar Assad.
