As the weather gets warmer, more and more bugs will soon be buzzing about.
This means that lovebugs will be remerging, and potentially gathering by the swarm during spring and summer.
Lovebugs have two main mating flight periods, one from April to May and another from August to September.
When is lovebug season? Here’s when and where expect swarms
Lovebugs are most common in the Southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
In Louisiana, adult lovebugs emerge in March or April and stick around until September. After emerging, lovebugs engage in mass-mating flights, especially in open areas.
In addition to this, during lovebug season, these insects are typically most active during the day, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
How to repel against lovebugs
In order to repel lovebugs, the focus should be on eliminating breeding grounds, and using natural or commercial repellents.

To eliminate breeding grounds, lawns should be mowed regularly, yard debris should be removed, vegetation should be trimmed and standing water should be eliminated.
As for natural repellents, peppermint oil and citrus scents can ward away lovebugs. Additionally, DIY sprays using water and vinegar, or water and dish soap, can be applied to areas where lovebugs are active.
If natural repellents don’t get the job done, residual insecticides can be used around the perimeter of your home and along potential points of entry.
How to remove lovebugs from vehicles
During lovebug season, these insects may decide to land on vehicles and, when they do, they can cause damage to car paint.
In order to prevent damage from lovebugs, cars should be washed regularly. Additionally, wet dryer sheets can be used to effectively remove lovebugs from vehicles without scratching the paint.
