The National Weather Service is predicting the Louisville area’s first significant winter storm of 2025 with snow, ice, sleet and rain hitting the region Sunday.
A winter storm warning is in effect through 7 p.m. Monday as the storm could bring upwards of 8 inches of snow along with significant ice accumulation that could cause widespread and prolonged power outages across the commonwealth.
States of emergency have been issued at local and state levels and several businesses and churches have already announced closures ahead of the system as driving conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly through the morning.

NWS Weather First ‘significant and impactful winter storm’ to hit Kentucky Sunday, NWS says. What we know
7 a.m.: Flights canceled as winter storm nears
National Weather Service officials warned of “major to extreme” winter storm impacts Sunday morning in Louisville as the city braces for significant snow and ice accumulation. The weather service estimated 6-8 inches of snow and a half-inch or more of ice through Monday afternoon. The forecast is subject to change later this morning and afternoon, the weather service said in a statement.
Snow is expected to arrive in Louisville first, followed by a wintry mix, according to the NWS. Heavier snow totals are expected to be along and north of Interstate 64, while the greatest accumulation of ice may occur along a line from southern Indiana to Lexington. The amount of freezing rain Louisville receives will impact both snow and ice totals over the course of the storm.
“Freezing rain will reduce snow amounts but increase ice potential,” a statement from the weather service read.
As of 7 a.m., 20 flights scheduled to depart from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport Sunday have been canceled, according to the airport’s flight status tracker. Of the flights scheduled to arrive in Louisville, 25 have been canceled. There were also several flights showing delays Sunday morning.
