A 35-year-old New Berlin woman was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash on eastbound Interstate 72 late Saturday, according to reports from the Illinois State Police and the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office.

The woman was hit just east of the New Berlin exit, or milepost 82.5, at approximately 11:13 p.m., according to ISP Trooper Shannon Barrea.

In an email, Barrea didn’t say why the woman was walking on the interstate or disclose any description of the vehicle.

The interstate’s eastbound lanes were shut down for about six hours, according to Barrea.
