Robert Pattinson in “Mickey 17.”
Mickey 17 — Parasite director Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi comedy starring Robert Pattinson — is off to a rough start at the domestic box office.
According to Deadline, Mickey 17, which is Ho’s first film since his 2019 Best Picture Oscar winner Parasite, is projected to earn around $19 million to $20 million from 3,807 North American theaters for a No. 1 finish in its debut weekend.
Mickey 17, per Deadline, had a production budget of $118 million before prints and advertising costs.
In Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson stars as Mickey Barnes, an “expendable” member of a colonization group venturing toward an ice planet in 2054. Since the scientists aboard the mission can clone and restore a person’s memories if they die, Mickey serves as a crash test dummy of sorts to gauge perilous situations.
Once Mickey dies, the scientists simply print another version of the expendable to take his place. However, when the seventeenth version of Mickey is presumed dead after he falls into a pit of seemingly vicious aliens, Mickey 18 is printed up, causing a huge dilemma when Mickey 17 reappears.
Meanwhile, Captain America: Brave New World has dropped to No. 2 at the domestic box office after taking the crown for the past three weeks.
Deadline estimates the Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford superhero adventure will take $8.5 in its fourth weekend of release to boost its running domestic tally to around $177 million.

Three Films Are In A Battle For Third Place At The Box Office.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, a three-way race is in play for the No. 3 slot at the weekend box office.
THR projects that the Woody Harrelson and Simi Liu deep sea thriller Last Breath, director Osgood Perkins’ horror comedy The Monkey and the family adventure Paddington in Peru are all looking to earn about $4 million.
Sony Pictures Entertainment, however, projects that Paddington in Peru will earn $3.850 million for the weekend, which would boost its domestic tally to $36.95 million through Sunday.
Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend to include the most current domestic and international numbers available. The final numbers will be released on Monday.
