Raúl Asencio has made 25 appearances for Real Madrid this season.
Defender Raúl Asencio is preparing to extend his spell at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu as he has reportedly agreed a new contract until 2029.
Spanish daily newspaper MARCA reports that the deal is agreed between the club and the player, who has made 25 first team appearances since being used as an emergency solution amid an injury crisis impacting Dani Carvajal, Éder Militão and David Alaba. The 22-year-old defender’s current agreement is set to run until 2026, and the new deal will see his salary increase significantly to reward his role in the first team.
The new contract will also see his release clause increase significantly from €50 million ($53.95 million), though the reports from MARCA do not stipulate what his new release clause would be worth.
It has been a rollercoaster ride for Asencio, who was part of the club’s tour of the United States in the summer and made his debut for the first team in a preseason exhibition match against Chelsea. He then returned to Castilla, the club’s B team, before making his first team competitive debut as a substitute against Osasuna earlier this season, recording an assist with a long ball to set up Jude Bellingham on his debut.
Since then, he has become a regular for Los Blancos, lining up alongside Antonio Rüdiger in high-profile games including recent Champions League battles against Manchester City and Atlético Madrid.
Value of Raúl Asencio’s Real Madrid contract
The deal is believed to see Asencio’s salary increase to €120,000 per week ($130,00 USD), but could increase further. The progressive nature of the contract means that Asencio could earn as much as €175,000 per week ($189,000 USD) by the final year of the contract in 2028/29.
This is in addition to sponsorships, such as a deal he agreed with Skechers according to MARCA. That endorsement alone is believed to be worth €500,000 ($540,000) and more are likely to follow should he continue his run as a first team player for Spain’s biggest soccer team.
His profile has also been boosted recently by his inclusion in the Spanish national team for the games against The Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League. However, coach Luis de la Fuente opted not to use the defender, who continues to wait for his international debut for La Roja.
Asencio’s ongoing legal preceedings
Despite his rise to prominence this season, Asencio remains under investigation for allegedly distributing a sexually explicit video involving a minor. In February, ESPN reported that a Spanish court rejected his appeal to end the investigation, maintaining his status as a suspect in the case.
The case has had media attention both in Spain and abroad, and rival fans have used it in their criticisms of Asencio and Real Madrid.
Speaking for the first time about the case in March, he told Relevo, “I think everyone is aware of what they are doing. In that sense, I am very calm. So, living day by day, in the end it’s a matter of deadlines”.
“Well, I have noticed this change of pressure on the field. It’s logical, isn’t it? With the change of category… But well, I’m a person that it motivates me to feel that pressure. I think I’ve been used to feeling that pressure at Madrid since I was a kid. It makes me even more motivated,” he continued.
