Marcelo recently called time on a career which saw him become one of the most decorated players of all time in terms of silverware.
While appearing on La Revuelta, Marcelo was invited to name which player is the greatest of all time overall, which of course forced the former left back to discuss a star in Messi who often featured on the right side of Barca’s attacking line meaning the Brazilian was left to mark him.
“I appreciate him a lot. He’s a crack, he’s incredible. I thought you were going to show me the videos in which he made a fool of me,” Marcelo said with a laugh.
“I didn’t even see him pass me. He was very fast. But no problem, I was born in a place where dribbling is the best, not being dribbled,” added the Rio de Janeiro native, who was indeed shown a clip of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner getting the better of him at another point of the broadcast.
“To pick one of the best in history… And the ones who have played before? Maradona, Pele, Di Stefano, Cruyff…,” added Marcelo, before joking that “the problem” with Messi “is that I wanted to hit him but I couldn’t get him”.
Messi’s main generational rival was of course Cristiano Ronaldo, and Marcelo said that he and his colleagues were “lucky to have played in the same era” as the pair while El Clasico hit its peak in the 2010s.
“Cristiano thinks he’s better. There was a time when it was messed up because one scored two, so the other had to score three… We saw this live and we enjoyed it very much. Many people want to compare but forgot to enjoy this,” Marcelo pointed out.
Despite being Madrid through and through, Marcelo confessed that he gets along “very well with some Barca players”.
“I have dealings with [Gerard] Pique, I talk to him. Pique is very authentic, very sincere. I like people to be sincere. I have a lot of respect for [Carles] Puyol, [Andres] Iniesta, Xavi [Hernandez]… [Pep] Guardiola’s time was complicated. We had to try to have the ball, but it was very difficult,” Marcelo concluded.
While his primary plans in retirement involve trying to go into art, music and cinema with his wife, Marcelo hasn’t ruled out returning to Madrid one day in some capacity.
