Real Madrid has held talks with Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich with regards to a possible free transfer switch next summer according to Bild, which cited anonymous sources.

The Spanish, European and world champion had previously courted Kimmich’s teammate Alphonso Davies for a year, with The Athletic reporting that it reached a verbal agreement with the Canadian.

In recent weeks, however, developments and outlets such as MARCA have pointed towards Davies renewing his contract which expires on June 30.

This would mean Madrid President Florentino Perez missing out on signing one of the world’s best left backs who he could have reportedly landed for $52 million (€50 million) before the ongoing season, which was Bayern’s asking price for a player with less than 12 months on his deal at the time.

Kimmich is in a similar predicament to Davies as per when he becomes a free agent.

He’s yet to sign on the dotted line and commit to the Bavarians past the mentioned date, and in being allowed to negotiate with whomever he wishes since the turn of 2025, the Germany international has held talks with Madrid according to Bild.

Furthermore, the 29-year-old previously wanted by an FC Barcelona unable to pay a significant transfer fee for him in 2023 under Xavi Hernandez would be in favour of switching the Bavarian capital for its Spanish counterpart.

Kimmich sees joining Los Blancos as a “serious and very attractive” option, and could fill a void left by his compatriot Toni Kroos in midfield.

Kroos retired at the height of his powers aged 34 last spring, and while Fede Valverde inherited his number 8 shirt, nobody has been able to replicate his playmaking abilities at the Bernabeu.

In signing Kimmich, Madrid would additionally receive a figure highly capable of playing as a right back as well, after being left without one on Wednesday for a 5-1 Champions League league phase win over RB Salzburg.

With Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez unavailable, Valverde had to fill the role. Meanwhile, Madrid could also land Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer from Liverpool in almost identical circumstances meaning head coach Carlo Ancelotti – if he doesn’t leave at the end of the season – or his successor would have two solid options in a key position.
