Real Madrid has decided which two positions it needs to strengthen in addition to the potential names it would like to fill the roles according to AS, which cited anonymous sources.
The Spanish champions have been strongly linked to Alphonso Davies since earlier in 2024 when The Athletic reported that President Florentino Perez had a verbal agreement in place with the Canadian.
Since then, however, talk of the left back renewing with Bayern Munich has emerged while Madrid also doesn’t have a pressing need to bring in more bodies for the position considering it already has Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia there.
The same can’t be said about right back, though, given that Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez – who isn’t a natural in that area of the pitch – are both approaching their mid-30s.
Furthermore, we’re not sure how the former Ballon d’Or candidate will come back from a season-ending ACL knock, picked up near the start of the ongoing 2024/2025 season, which has left Carlo Ancelotti short-staffed.
Because of these circumstances, signing soon-to-be free agent Trent Alexander Arnold from Liverpool after June 30, 2025 is a must.
The England international is a close friend of Jude Bellingham, and could make the switch after possibly winning the Premier League title with his boyhood club whose first team currently leads the elite championship by four points with a game in hand over second-place Chelsea and the rest of the pack.
In midfield, it is clear that Madrid has been unable to replace its legendary former number 8 Toni Kroos who retired after winning a treble which contained a record-extending 15th Champions League crown for Los Blancos in 2023/2024.
AS writes that Madrid is looking for “a player with good feet, capable of organizing the team’s play”, and “something similar to what Kroos represented in the squad”.
The chosen player is apparently Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, who came off the bench in the Euro 2024 final for Spain against Bellingham and Alexander Arnold’s England and changed the course of the eventual 2-1 victory when replacing injured Ballon d’Or winner Rodri.
While PSG’s Vitinha is another name being floated around, it is evident that Madrid needs to strengthen right back before thinking about midfield.
