UPDATE : 4 :45 p.m.
All flash flood warnings and most flood advisories have been canceled across the Hawaiian islands.
Only Kauai remained under a flood advisory, until 6 :15 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
“At 3 :08 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over Kauai, particularly across an area south of Mount Waialeale. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour. Additional showers and thunderstorms are expected to move into south-and east-facing slopes in the next hour, ” the advisory said.
The flood advisory and flash flood warning for Maui were canceled before 4 :30 p.m.
For the 24-hour period ending at 3 :45 p.m., NWS rain gauges recorded 10.6 inches of rain on Mount Waialeale, 6.7 inches at Poamoho near Wahiawa on Oahu, and nearly 3 inches in Haiku, Maui.

Forecasters expect the rain to continue easing tonight into Saturday, but light winds may lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms in island interior areas this evening, and mostly windward areas overnight.
Moderate tradewinds are forecast to return Saturday and through the weekend with lingering showers throughout the state.
The weather service said another storm system is expected to hit the islands early next week, disrupting tradewinds and bring “another chance for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to the islands Tuesday through Thursday.”
4 :10 p.m.
The flash flood warning and flood advisory for Oahu have been canceled as rains ease across the island.
The warning and advisory for Maui remain in place. Kauai is also under a flood advisory through 6 :15 p.m.
3 :40 p.m.
The City & County of Honolulu said the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Waikane Valley Road has been reopened after being closed this afternoon due to flooding.
2 :50 p.m.
The National Weather Service has extended the flash flood warning for Oahu until 4 :15 p.m.
“At 2 :36 p.m., the Waiahole Stream reported a rapid rise in water level. Flooding is occurring between Waiahole Valley Road and Kamehameha Highway, ” the weather service’s updated warning said.
Honolulu police said officers closed the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Waikane Valley Road due to flooding.
The warning covers Waipio, Wahiawa, Mililani, Wheeler Field, Schofield Barracks, Punaluu, Waikane, Hauula, Waiahole, Pearl City, Kaaawa, Waikele, Laie, Waipahu, Kahaluu, Aiea, Haleiwa, Waialua, Kahuku and Ahuimanu.
Maui remains under a flash flood warning until 4 :30 p.m. and a flood advisory through 6 :30 p.m.
Flood advisories cover Kauai until 6 :15 p.m., and Oahu and Molokai until 5 p.m.
1 :35 p.m.
The island of Maui is under a flash flood warning until 4 :30 p.m., forecasters said.
“At 1 :18 p.m., emergency management reported heavy rain over the slopes and summit of Haleakala. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly, ” the Maui warning said.
The warning covers Kahului, Kihei, Kula, Keokea, Pukalani, Makawao, Haliimaile, Keanae, Huelo, Kipahulu, Kaupo, Haiku-Pauwela, Nahiku, Ulupalakua, Wailea, Pauwela, Paia, Makena, Puunene and Maalaea.
The National Weather Service earlier issued a flash flood warning for Oahu until 3 p.m. Molokai remains under a flood advisory until 3 p.m.
1 :15 p.m.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood warning for West Oahu through 3 p.m. today.
“At 1 :04 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over western Oahu, particularly in the Waianae Valley, ” the warning says. “Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.”
Areas that will experience flash flooding include Waianae, Nanakuli, Makakilo, Kunia, Kapolei, Waikele, Waipahu, Barbers Point, Ewa Beach, Lualualei, Maili, Makaha, Koolina, Makua Valley, Campbell Industrial Park, Kalaeloa Airport, Dillingham Field and Kaena State Park, according to NWS.
Forecasters warned of flooding in drainages, streams, rivers, roads, properties, and other low-lying areas. Landslides are possible in steep terrain, they said.
The weather service issued a separate “special weather statement ” saying that a strong thunderstorm is impacting the area through 1 :30 p.m.
“At 1 :05 p.m., Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Punaluu, or 14 miles northeast of Waipio, moving southwest at 20 mph, ” according to NWS. The thunderstorm has wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail.
“Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible, ” the statement says.
The areas covered by the thunderstorm advisory include Whitmore Village, Hauula, Mililani, Campbell Industrial Park, Waipio, Wahiawa, Waialua, Makua Valley, Lualualei, Kahana Valley State Park, Schofield Barracks, Laie, Maili, Kaena State Park, Helemano Housing, Kualoa, Kalaeloa Airport, Kaaawa, Punaluu, and Waimalu.
1 p.m.
The island of Maui joins Molokai and Oahu under flood advisories this afternoon as a storm system lingers over Hawaii.
”At 12 :22 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over the west Maui mountains and the slopes of Haleakala, particularly upslope of Hana, and Ulupalakua Ranch. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, ” the National Weather Service said.
The advisory is in effect until 3 :30 p.m. and covers Kahului, Kihei, Lahaina, Kula, Pukalani, Makawao, Keokea, Haliimaile, Paia, Puunene, Haiku-Pauwela, Wailea, Pauwela, Maalaea, Ulupalakua, Huelo, Makena, Waikapu, Wailuku and Waiehu.
The flood advisory for Molokai, meanwhile, has been extended to 3 :45 p.m.
At 12 :36 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over northwest Molokai. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.
Some locations that will experience flooding include Maunaloa, Kepuhi, Hoolehua, Kualapuu, Kalaupapa National Park and Molokai Airport.
12 :30 p.m.
The National Weather Service has issued flood advisories for Oahu and Molokai this afternoon due to excessive rainfall. Both advisories are in effective until 3 p.m. today.
At 11 :57 a.m., radar indicated heavy rain over western Oahu with rain falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches an hour, according to the NWS.
The areas covered by the advisory include Waianae, Schofield Barracks, Nanakuli, Wheeler Field, Waialua, Kunia, Wahiawa, Mililani, Makakilo, Waikele, Haleiwa, Waipahu, Kapolei, Ewa Beach, Barbers Point, Lualualei, Maili, Makaha, Whitmore Village and Makua Valley.
For Molokai, the weather service said that at 11 :55 a.m., radar indicated heavy rain over the eastern side of the island with rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches an hour. The Molokai advisory includes Kamalo, Ualapue, Kalaupapa National Park, Kawela, Pukoo, Halawa Valley, Kaunakakai and Kualapuu.
Forecasters warn of minor flooding on roads, in poor drainage areas and in streams on both islands. The public should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding, they said.
11 :30 a.m.
The flash flood warning has been canceled for the island of Kauai.
“The heavy rain has ended and flash flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat, ” the National Weather Service said in a bulletin.
However, forecasters said the rainy weather will linger into the weekend, threatening heavy rain and possible thundershowers The showers will favor island interiors during the afternoon and evening and along windward areas overnight, they said.
“Locally heavy rain and a slight chance of thunderstorms is forecast through today as an upper low moves over the state, ” the latest forecast says. “Moderate trades are expected to return Saturday through the weekend. Lingering moisture and instability will likely maintain a rather showery pattern, even for leeward areas through the weekend.”
The weather service also said another storm system could bring heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to the islands Tuesday and Wednesday.
8 :25 A.M.
A flash flood warning has been posted for the island of Kauai and is in effect through 11 :15 a.m. today.
Radar at 8 :17 a.m. showed heavy rain over the interior of Kauai with rain falling at rates up to 3 inches per hour, according to the National Weather Service. Water has been reported running over the Hanalei River Bridge by Kauai Emergency Management Agency personnel.
“Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly, ” the NWS said in a bulletin. Residents and visitors are warned to avoid streams, rivers, drainage ditches and culverts, even if they look dry.
“Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.”
Weather officials say the flash flood warning may need to be extended past 11 :15 a.m. if flooding persists.
The earlier flood advisory for Kauai has been canceled.
PREVIOUS COVERAGE The National Weather Service has issued a new flood advisory for the island of Kauai and extended a winter weather advisory for Hawaii island summits as unsettled weather continues across the state.
The flood advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. today for all of Kauai due to continued elevated stream levels and an incoming area of heavy showers and thunderstorms, particularly near southern portions of the island around sunrise.
Radar at 4 :49 a.m. showed rainfall rates over interior Kauai had decreased to under an inch per hour, but forecasters warned that minor flooding in low-lying areas, poor drainage zones and streams could persist.
Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding, officials said.
Meanwhile, a winter weather advisory for Hawaii island summits has been extended through 6 a.m. Saturday, with up to 2 additional inches of snow expected as a slow-moving upper-level trough crosses the islands. Forecasters warned of dangerous travel conditions and periods of zero visibility due to blowing snow.
The advisory covers the summit areas of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, where snow accumulations and icy conditions are likely through early Saturday.
Forecasters say today’s weather will remain unsettled, with afternoon and evening showers focused over mauka areas and overnight rain along windward areas. Locally heavy rain with a slight chance of thunderstorms is expected today along with light winds.
A return to moderate tradewinds is expected by Saturday, but lingering moisture and instability could keep showery weather in place statewide through the weekend.
Another storm system could bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to the islands by Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather service said.
