President Trump on Wednesday surprised reporters with a personal tour of the White House renovations.
The president is currently renovating the East Wing Ballroom, the South Lawn Helipad and the North Portico.
The demolition and construction of the White House Ballroom sparked a fierce legal battle.
Trump presented the new helipad to the reporters and greeted the construction workers.
“This is mostly going to be for helicopters, a lot of use. You know, when they landed a helicopter, every time they landed it, people would have to go outside with steel pads, put them down, that were very, they were just the size of one of these slabs, and put them down, and hope the helicopter was able to land them,” Trump told reporters.
“The good thing about Marine One is Marine One is the helicopter division of the White House, essentially.”
“We have the best pilots in the world – the best helicopters,” Trump said.
“The more powerful helicopters, literally this grass would be ripped out by its roof and by its roots,” he said.
“And in one landing, the entire grass was gone. So what they did is when a president would be flown to the White House, they used different helicopters,” Trump added.
“I said, that’s a pretty expensive way of doing it. So now, with the helipad, we won’t have any problem with the grass!” Trump said.
