UEFA via Getty ImagesThe Premier League could be the next destination for a Real Madrid academy product who left the club last summer but has since been talked up by head coach Carlo Ancelotti as its future.
Nico Paz made his La Liga and Champions League debuts for Los Blancos last season, and even scored in the latter-mentioned elite European tournament while claiming winners’ medals in each competition as part of an impressive treble completed by the Spanish Super Cup.
Heading into 2024/2025, though, he was sold on to Como, which is currently managed by ex-FC Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabrgegas.
The moneyed Italian outfit paid $6.5 million (€6.3 million) for 50% of Nico’s rights yet Madrid has buyback options across three seasons for the Spain-born Argentine youth international.
More specifically, it can pay $8.3 million (€8 million) for him in 2025, $9.4 million (€9 million) in 2026 or $10.4 million (€10 million) in 2027.
Recent comments made by Ancelotti show that the boss is interested in the 20-year-old successfully completing what is known as the [Dani] “Carvajal route,” in reference to the club legend right back.
A decade ago, the Euro 2024 winner was shipped out to Bayer Leverkusen only for Madrid to buy him back a year later with the rest, as they say, history.
“Nico Paz is a player we follow a lot. He’s very good and he’s very talented. This season away from Real Madrid is very good for him. We believe that he is a player who can be the future of Real Madrid,” Ancelotti stated, to Italian outlet Rai Radio.
Como is interested in buying the remaining 50% of Nico’s rights, while Madrid might look to bring him back to the Bernabeu post-haste.
Meanwhile, though, several Premier League clubs are lurking in the background and have set their sights on him.
Namely they are Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City according to Mundo Deportivo, which cited anonymous sources.
Of that pack, Spurs is reportedly the outfit that has shown the most interest, and it will undoubtedly have the cash ready to tempt Real Madrid into a permanent sale.
The two clubs have a good rapport considering past deals for the likes of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric, yet it seems difficult to believe that President Florentino Perez would let Nico walk permanently if he is truly considered “the future of Real Madrid”.
