A 22-year-old man has died after a late-night brawl erupted outside of a bar in downtown Phoenix.
Police said Rafael Montoya died Wednesday at a hospital as a result of injuries that occurred during the fight on Sunday.
According to Sgt. Phil Krynsky with the Phoenix Police Department, a large fight broke out around 2:30 a.m. between multiple people on the street, just outside of a bar near Central Avenue and Pierce Street.
Two Phoenix police officers were working security in an off-duty capacity at the bar, and Krynsky said as they worked to diffuse the fight, they were alerted by witnesses that Montoya was on the ground unconscious.
An officer assessed Montoya and determined he was breathing but had head injuries. Krynsky said officers remained with Montoya until fire personnel arrived. He was taken to the hospital and admitted for severe head trauma.
Phoenix police detectives took over the investigation, processing the scene, speaking to witnesses and searching for video evidence. Krynsky confirmed multiple people involved in the fight were interviewed, identified and released.
Detectives believe there are people who possibly captured video footage of the incident, and the department is asking them to come forward and share that footage with investigators.
Krynsky provided a QR code where witnesses can access a portal to submit videos.
Anyone with information can call Phoenix police or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (480-948-6377) or 480-TESTEGO (480-837-8446) if they wish to remain anonymous.
No arrests have been made as detectives continue to process evidence, according to Krynsky.
