NEED TO KNOW

New Year’s violence

A truck attack in New Orleans killed at least 15 people hours before a Tesla Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas killed one and injured seven others yesterday. Both incidents are being investigated as terrorism.

In NOLA: Investigators identified Shamsud-Din Jabbar, an Army vet who may have been inspired by ISIS, as the suspect who rammed a pickup truck rented using the Turo app into New Year’s Eve revelers in New Orleans. He died at the scene. [NBC News]

In Vegas: Police haven’t yet identified the person who died in the Cybertruck, where they found fireworks, gas tanks and camping fuel. The truck was also rented on Turo. Officials said it may be a coincidence, but they’re investigating any links to New Orleans. [CNN]

NOLA victims: An official list of the New Orleans victims hasn’t been released, but friends and family have begun sharing tributes online. The victims included an aspiring nurse, a former Princeton football star, a single mother and a father of two. [AP]

3 QUESTIONS

…about Dry January

If you’ve been considering a break from alcohol, Dry January is a great time to start. I asked Hilary Sheinbaum, author of The Dry Challenge, for some tips.

Jessica: What exactly does Dry January entail?

Hilary: Dry January means no booze all this month. Its popularity has grown so much since it started in the U.K. more than 10 years ago. If you simply want to cut down on alcohol rather than cut it out entirely, you could also opt for a Damp January.

Hilary: More people are wellness-focused than ever before. In my convos with those who tried it, many said they saw benefits like better sleep and clearer skin, and they saved money too! It also gives you time to do more things you love, since you won’t be dealing with hangovers.

Jessica: What can people who feel pressured to go out and drink do to avoid it?

Hilary: I’d recommend that people take the lead and suggest activities other than going to a bar, like bowling or an art class. If your friends insist, there are apps that can help. One that I like is called Better Without — it can show you places that serve nonalcoholic drinks.

Ready to go dry? Try Hilary’s recipe for a Taylor Swift-inspired mocktail, and follow her on Instagram.
