A 20-year-old man has been named as the suspect in a chilling ambush that left two firefighters dead and one injured on Canfield Mountain.

The Gateway Pundit reported earlier that the suspect has been identified as 20‑year‑old Wess Roley, accused of intentionally setting a brush fire on Sunday, on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to lure firefighters into an ambush.

Upon arrival around 2:00 p.m., crews took refuge behind their fire trucks as gunfire erupted from a sniper’s position deep in the woods.

Two firefighters—one from the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and one from Kootenai County Fire and Rescue—were killed instantly, and a third was critically wounded.

“We do believe that the suspect started the fire, and we do believe that it was an ambush and it was intentional,” Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said during a Sunday night news conference. “These firefighters did not have a chance.”

Norris went on to say that the gunman was apparently hiding in the rugged terrain and using a high-powered rifle. He noted that he instructed deputies to fire back.

Over 300 officers, along with FBI agents and helicopter sharpshooters, swarmed the area. A shelter‑in‑place order was issued as authorities deployed tactical assets.

Roley was later found dead near his weapon after law enforcement. Officials say he acted alone, but whether he died by suicide or police action remains unclear.

Photos of the suspect are now circulating online, as reported by the New York Post.
