A Pensacola man was arrested Thursday after a video of him allegedly abusing a dog went viral on social media.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Charles David Thornton II, 49, for cruelty towards an animal, noting in a Facebook post Thursday that “A video of this incident has been circulating on social media.”
The video in question appears to show a man striking a dog repeatedly with a bat or rod-like object, and dragging the dog by its hind leg as it cowers and tries to get away.
The video was shared widely on social media, with many commenters calling for the individual’s arrest.
Thornton was taken into custody in connection with the incident Thursday evening and is currently being held in Escambia County Jail on $5,000 bond.
The condition and current location of the dog was not immediately available Friday morning.
