WICHITA, KS – MARCH 15: Head coach Steve Donahue of the Pennsylvania Quakers reacts in the second … [+]
Penn has fired head men’s basketball coach Steve Donahue, the school announced Monday.
Penn went 8-19 this season, 4-10 in the Ivy League. Donahue, 62, went 131-130 in nine seasons at the school after stops at Cornell and Boston College. He was previously an assistant coach at Penn from 1991-2000.
“I’m appreciative of Steve’s long tenure of leadership and service to Penn basketball and our student-athletes, both as an assistant and head coach,” Penn AD Alana Wren said. “Steve has been steadfast in his commitment to the program and the development of our student-athletes. I’ve always had great respect for his commitment to Ivy values, and he has been a strong representative of Penn during his career. Unfortunately, the competitive success on the court has not been up to our standards. While difficult, a change in leadership is necessary to provide the championship-caliber experience our student-athletes, alumni and fans expect. We wish Steve and his family the best moving forward.”
The school will use Parker Executive Search as its search firm to find a replacement.
Columbia also announced Monday that head coach Jim Engles was stepping down.
