Peacemaker season 2 is not out until August 21 of this year, but now it’s dropped a new trailer that both A) looks good and B) seems to be solving a continuity problem between James Gunn’s season 1 in the DCEU and the season 2 that he says is in the DCU instead.

How exactly does that work? Well, the end of the Peacemaker season 2 seems to broadcast what’s happening here.

In it, John Cena’s Peacemaker walks through a door to find…another Peacemaker who pulls a gun on him and asks who he is. It seems almost certain this is DCU Peacemaker versus DCEU Peacemaker.

The concept here may be that the DCU storyline exactly mirrors the DCEU storyline from season 1, only in another universe, and but it is in the DCU despite the similar events and will fork off to the DCU proper after this, hence why it shares characters and actors.

Here, we see things directly connected to the DCU like Peacemaker auditioning for Maxwell Lord’s Justice League in front of Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner, who will all be in Superman. But this appears to be a DCU where the events of the DCEU show also have happened. Not just that, but also Gunn’s Suicide Squad where Peacemaker kills Rick Flagg.

It’s not clear when Peacemaker or the rest of this cast may show up in the DCU afterward, as I don’t believe it’s meant to continue on for a third season, that we know about, at least. But this is a way for Gunn to shave off his small portion of the DCEU without losing the continuity he set up there. Albeit this still raises at least some questions like…is Margot Robbie still the DCU’s Harley Quinn? I doubt that’s going to be answered any time soon, and interviews have indicated she’s done with the role.

Is this all necessary for Gunn to do? I mean, maybe not, but you can’t blame him for not wanting to throw his old work in the bin. This is comic universe, you can do any weird multiverse stuff you want, so you might as well play that card here. I am certainly curious to see how this plays out in practice, and if season 2 will connect more directly to Superman or other projects. At the very least, it certainly feels like Amanda Waller is going to be bouncing around going forward with a central role in many DC storylines.
