After several offseason discussions centered around Joe Milton’s trade value and potential landing destinations, the former sixth-round selection was dealt to a new home that resides in the NFC East.

The New England Patriots traded its 2024 late round asset and this year’s seventh-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2025 fifth-round selection yesterday afternoon. Reportedly, New England received interests from teams such as the Las Vegas Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers before deciding on Dallas.

According to MassLive.com’s Mark Daniels, Milton was determined to depart from New England to have the chance to compete for a NFL starting quarterback job. Such an opportunity wasn’t possible in New England since it drafted Drake Maye third overall from Milton’s same draft class to be the future franchise guy.

While the dual-threat talent won’t be in line to start on the Cowboys anytime soon, he’ll be backing up an injury-riddled 31-year-old Dak Prescott. Prescott has played under 10 full games in two seperate seasons this decade and is coming off a partially torn hamstring injury that ended his 2024 campaign after eight games.

The 25-year-old Milton saw his stock rise following a stellar outing versus the Buffalo Bills reserves in a Week 18 victory. Milton threw for 241 yards and a score while rushing for 16 yards and a touchdown in a showing that highlighted his big arm potential and pocket mobility.

It was Dallas’ intention to add a potential backup quarterback to its roster. It did so by trading for Milton who will have plenty of opportunity to validate his roster standing during the preseason.
