The nominations for the 97th Annual Oscars have been moved once again as the L.A. wildfires continue to rage across the region.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences originally moved the date of the Oscar nominations from Friday, Jan. 17 to Sunday, Jan. 19. However, since fire officials are still fighting to contain the blazes, the announcement of the nominations has been moved once again.
In a press release issued by AMPAS on Monday, the nominations for the 2025 Oscars will be announced at 8:30 a.m. ET / 5:30 a.m. PT on Thursday, Jan. 23. The nominations will still be announced live but virtually and no press will not be in attendance.
The date for the 97th Annual Oscars, the Academy noted, is still Sunday, March 2.
Additionally, the voting deadline for the nominations has been extended to 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Friday, Jan. 17.
Previously, the deadline was set for 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Friday, Jan. 12. According to The Hollywood Reporter, at least four AMPAS governors and a former CEO have lost their homes in the blazes. The trade publication noted that roughly 60% of the Academy’s approximately 10,000 members reside in the L.A. area.
AMPAS also announced in its press release that this year’s annual Oscars luncheon has been canceled altogether, while the Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards—which were scheduled for Feb. 18—have been postponed and will be handed out at a later date.
In a statement released by AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang, the Oscars ceremony this year will encourage viewers to join in relief efforts in the wake of the devastation left by the wildfires.
“Our members always share how important it is for us to come together as a community, and we are determined to use this opportunity to celebrate our resilient and compassionate industry,” the Academy’s statement partially read. “We also look forward to honoring our frontline workers who have aided with the fires, recognizing those impacted, and encouraging people to join the Academy in supporting the relief efforts.”
In addition, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the Academy has made a $750,000 donation to the Motion Picture & Televsion Fund in relief efforts to help those affected by the wildfires.
Several Celebrities Have Lost Homes In L.A. Wildfires
The Los Angeles-area wildfires broke out last Tuesday and quickly spread on Wednesday, taking with it several celebrity homes and historic landmarks.
Such showbiz industry luminaries as Anthony Hopkins, Jeff Bridges, Eugene Levy, Mandy Moore and Billy Crystal all lost homes early on in the wildfires, as did actor-director Mel Gibson.
Film premieres were cancelled amid the blazes and live events like the Screen Actors Guild nominations were scrapped in favor a press release announcing the nominees, while production on some TV shows came to a halt.
Like the organizers of the Oscars, the Producers Guild of America—which initially rescheduled its nomination announcement for Saturday—postponed the nominations again. According to Variety, will be revealed sometime this week, but no specific date was indicated.
