An off-duty St. Cloud police officer and physician came to the rescue Saturday, potentially saving a seven-year-old’s life.
A young girl was found unresponsive under water at roughly 10:45 a.m. Saturday during her YMCA swimming lesson, according to a St. Cloud Police Department release.
Police and fire department officials responded to the scene as bystanders performed CPR. An off-duty police officer and a physician reportedly performed emergency medical care.

The release states the girl was taken to St. Cloud Hospital via Mayo Ambulance, and police say information on her condition is currently unavailable.
Drowning is the second leading cause of death for Minnesota children ages one through 14, according to the St. Cloud YMCA’s website. Roughly 80% of children with a household income of less than $50,000 have little to no swimming ability due to lack of education access.
