The National Weather Service has issued a “hazardous weather outlook” for the southeast New York region (which includes the Lower Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island) as well as southern Connecticut and northeast New Jersey for Friday, March 21.
“Northwest wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph likely through this afternoon,” the NWS said. “Isolated peak wind gusts to 50 mph possible.”
According to the Lower Hudson Valley forecast from NWS, Friday will be “windy,” with a northwest wind of up to 22 to 29 mph, and potential for gusts as high as 45 mph. In Putnam, winds won’t be as strong, but there’s still a chance of gusts up to 39 mph.
Gusty conditions could persist Friday evening, with a northwest wind up to 13 mph becoming “light west” after midnight. Gusts as high as 25 mph are possible.
Saturday will also be pretty breezy, with gusts as high as 24 mph in the forecast. Saturday night’s gusts could be as strong as 33 mph.

Gale warning extended to 8 p.m. Friday for downstate NY
A gale warning, which was issued Thursday by the NWS and went into effect at 6 a.m. Friday, has been extended to 8 p.m. Friday evening.
The warning, which forecasts “northwest winds 20 to 25 kt with gusts up to 35 kt,” affects Long Island Sound, New York Harbor, Peconic and Gardiners Bays, and South Shore Bays from Jones Inlet through Shinnecock Bay.
In New York Harbor, wind gusts of 33 kts, and wind speeds of 27.2 kts were observed at 6:50 a.m., Friday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
“Strong winds will cause hazardous seas which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility,” the warning says. “Mariners should alter plans to avoid these hazardous conditions. Remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course, and/or secure the vessel for hazardous conditions.”
