Nirvana’s Nevermind and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” both find their way back to one Billboard chart … [+]
Nirvana is one of many legacy acts that regularly rises and falls on the Billboard charts. It’s rare for the group to find its footing on only one or two tallies, but it’s not uncommon for the rockers to slip off one list or return to another based on current competition, or any exciting news that may convince fans to begin buying and streaming the band’s catalog again.
On this week’s Billboard charts, Nirvana’s performance is mixed. On some rankings, the act rises, but in other instances, a hit album or successful single falls. What is notable is that Nirvana manages to reappear on two different tallies this frame. The band sees its most successful album break back onto one list, while the song that has stuck with so many millions of listeners for so long is a smash yet again.
Nirvana’s Nevermind can be found on five different Billboard rankings this frame. It reappears on the Top Album Sales chart at No. 48, as it once again ranks among the 50 bestselling releases in the U.S. According to Luminate, the blockbuster sold another 2,400 copies last frame, which shows an increase of just under 11% from the period before, when it managed 2,200 sales.
Nevermind climbs on three genre-specific rankings published by Billboard at the same time. It improves on the Top Alternative Albums (No. 13), Top Rock Albums (No. 16), and Top Rock & Alternative Albums (No. 21) charts. At the same time, the rock classic also falls ever so slightly on the Billboard 200, the most important albums ranking in America. Nirvana’s beloved release steps back just two spaces from No. 94 to No. 96, as it shifted 12,500 equivalent units throughout the country.
Just one of Nirvana’s singles is also performing well enough to appear on the Billboard charts, and this frame, it lives on two of them. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” reappears on the Alternative Streaming Songs list, which, as its name suggests, ranks the most-streamed tracks classified by Billboard specifically as alternative. On that tally, Nirvana breaks back in at No. 23.
The band is one of several that collects a comeback on the list, as two tunes by Billie Eilish–“Ocean Eyes” (No. 21) and “Lunch” (No. 24)–as well as Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” (No. 22) also manage to find their way back to the same ranking in very similar positions.
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” appears on just one more Billboard tally this frame. It dips a single space on the Billboard Global 200, falling to No. 197, which means it barely hangs on when it comes to the list of the 200 most-consumed tunes throughout the entire world.
