We heard many times after the debut of Squid Game season 2 that there would not be anything like a three year wait until season 3. In fact, due to how this was scripted and shot, season 3 of Squid Game now has a release date with one of the shortest gaps we’ve ever seen on Netflix.
Netflix has just revealed that the official release date for Squid Game season 3 is June 27, 2025. That is almost exactly six months to the day after season 2 was released at Christmas, and it will end the series for good ahead of the also-huge releases of Stranger Things season 5 and Wednesday season 2 later in the year. This would also put Squid Game in potential Emmy contention for two years in a row, based on that spacing.
We already got clues from creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk that it would not be a long wait for season 3 because of how it was made and split with season 2. From an interview with Deadline:
“When I was writing the script for the two seasons, I felt like there was a big turning point or an inflection point, and that was the end of episode seven, so I thought that it would do it justice to have a separate season after that. That’s why I had first seven episodes as Season 2 and then the rest of Season 3,” he said.
Then, later, he seemed to indicate it would arrive in the summer, and here we are, right in the middle of that and just half a year after season 2, which is pretty unprecedented. I’m not sure we have confirmation of the exact number of Squid Game season 3 episodes, but it may be seven like season 2, down from the 9 of season 1.
Squid Game season 2 broke viewership speed records time and time again in the weeks following its release as it attempts to catch Squid Games season 1’s all time record. Last we heard, season 2 has 1.2 billion hours viewed to season 1’s 2.2 billion. Not to say it cannot catch it over the long term, though I’m not sure if this very fast release for season 3 will help or hurt its prospects. Either way, it doesn’t really matter, it’s a massive hit and will continue to be. It’s already the fourth most-watched season of a show in Netflix history after just a month.
Season 3 will see the aftermath of (spoilers) the failed rebellion of the contestants and the return of the covert villain to his original role. There are a number of contestants still alive to reach the end of the games, and we are only halfway through them because of the split. A while back you may have assumed there would be two more sets of games for two more seasons, but this way probably makes more sense, especially now that we’ve seen how season 2 was structured. Promotion is already ramping up, and we’ll probably get a trailer relatively soon.
