“A Deadly American Marriage” on Netflix.
Courtesy of NetflixNetflix is known for its gripping true crime content, and the streamer’s next documentary will leave viewers’ heads spinning. In A Deadly American Marriage, a father-daughter duo defend killing the daughter’s husband. While they claim it was self-defense, was there something more sinister at play?
Produced and directed by Jessica Burgess (American Monster) and Jenny Popplewell, Deadly American Marriage focuses on what happened on August 2, 2015, when Jason Corbett was killed by Molly Martens and her father, Thomas, a former FBI agent.
Corbett was originally from Ireland, where he lived in Limerick with his wife, Margaret “Mags” Fitzpatrick, and their two children, Jack and Sarah. Unfortunately, months after Sarah was born, Margaret died of complications from an asthma attack, according to Netflix Tudum.
While looking for help with his young kids, Corbett posted a job profile on an au pair agency website and hired the 24-year-old Tennessee native. Corbett and Martens eventually fell in love and tied the knot.
The family relocated from Ireland to Lexington, North Carolina, to begin their new life together. They were just a few hours away from from Molly’s father, Tom (who had a 30-year career as an FBI agent), who lived in Knoxville, Tennessee, with his wife.
Deadly American Marriage explores the many lingering questions about what happened the night Corbett died. According to 10News, investigators said the two used an aluminum baseball bat and brick paver to kill Corbett, fracturing his skull and injuring his arm, legs and torso. Meanwhile, the defense claimed the two acted in self-defense because they feared for their lives during an altercation with Corbett.
The documentary also sheds light on the custody battle over Jack and Sarah, who were 10 and 8 years old, respectively, at the time of their father’s death. Jason’s children now live in Ireland under the guardianship of their aunt Tracey Corbett-Lynch and her husband David.
Both Tracey and David are interviewed in A Deadly American Marriage, along with Jack and Sarah, and the individuals responsible for Jason’s death, Molly and Thomas. Learn exactly when A Deadly American Marriage will be released on Netflix and how to watch the documentary, below.
