NBC’s latest episode of Law & Order draws inspiration from the real-life case of Luigi Mangione, the New York man who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024 — and made him into a folk hero.
The episode, titled “Inconvenience,” features a character named Robbie Ballard, a grocery store worker who assassinates a health insurance executive outside a Manhattan hotel after his sister’s cancer treatment is denied.
The show presents Ballard as a complex and somewhat sympathetic figure.
Mangione shot Thompson on December 4, 2024, outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. He pleaded not guilty to murder and weapons charges on March 18, 2025, after extradition from Pennsylvania.
Though the murder was caught on camera, Mangione instantly developed a fan base of people who support him and view the killing as a stance against “corporate greed.”
The episode drew 3.9 million viewers.
WARNING, SPOILER AHEAD:
In the Law & Order episode, Ballard’s story mirrors Mangione’s: a working-class man pushed to extremes by a denied insurance claim.
The episode concludes by revealing Ballard’s sister survived, with her treatments funded by crowdfunding.
Detective Frank Cosgrove, played by Jeffrey Donovan, ultimately states: “I’m not saying he’s a hero, but I get it.”
The real Mangione remains in custody pending trial.
