Musk ready to re-enter politics – WSJ

The mogul is poised to support the Republicans in the midterms after a détente with President Trump, the paper claims

Elon Musk is getting to ready throw his full weight behind the Republican Party ahead of the crucial midterm elections, despite his recent falling-out with US President Donald Trump, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing sources.

People familiar with the matter told the paper Musk, an owner of X, Space X and Tesla, had been approached by top Republicans, including Vice President J.D. Vance, to help the Republicans hold onto the majority in both chambers of Congress.

In this vein, Musk reportedly routed $10 million to a super PAC backing Kentucky businessman Nate Morris, who is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Mitch McConnell.

WSJ sources also claimed that Musk’s political team had been meeting prospective vendors in recent weeks, with an emphasis on digital and text-messaging specialists. The mogul’s key goal for the November midterms is reportedly to rally the voters who previously voted for Trump but who take little interest in congressional elections.

Musk’s plans and scale of the effort, nonetheless, are not set in stone, with no certainty over the exact mechanisms to be deployed for supporting the GOP, the article says.

Musk played an outsized role in the 2024 election cycle, when he donated $288 million to support Trump and other Republicans, according to the Washington Post. After Trump’s victory, Musk was appointed as the head of the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

However, the relationship between the two men cooled in mid-2025 when Musk attacked Trump’s signature tax-and-spending package, calling the draft “utterly insane and destructive.” However, the two appeared to have moved beyond their past grievances when they were seen together at a memorial service for the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Later, photos emerged showing the two dining together.

Musk’s reported return to the political arena comes amid apprehensions in the Republican Party that they could lose their congressional majority. A New York Times/Siena poll this week put Democrats ahead on a generic congressional ballot 48% to 43% among registered voters.

Trump has framed the midterms as existential for his presidency, telling House Republicans this month they “gotta win the midterms… [or] I’ll get impeached.”
