Moorpark has chosen its next police chief.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Nick Odenath will step into the role on April 13th, the agency announced.

Moorpark contracts with the sheriff’s office for police services. The chief post typically changes every few years.

Odenath will replace Moorpark’s current chief, Capt. Darin Hendren, who will be promoted to a sheriff’s commander role next month.

“I’m confident Nick will continue the tradition of providing the residents of the city of Moorpark and the surrounding unincorporated areas with outstanding police services,” Sheriff Jim Fryhoff said in a statement.

Odenath lives in Moorpark with his wife, Kari, and two children, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

He started his career with the agency in 2001, serving stints as a custody and patrol deputy, court services supervisor, custody watch commander, narcotics detective, asset forfeiture and financial crimes investigator, SWAT operator, human trafficking investigator and Technical Services supervisor.

Odenath earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from California Lutheran University. He is an expert in human trafficking investigations and teaches on the topic around the country, officials said.

The captain said in a statement he was stepping into the role with respect for the leaders who preceded him.

“Their dedication has set a high standard, and I am committed to building upon that foundation,” Odenath said. “Moorpark is home to some of the best-trained and dedicated peace officers in California, and we are fortunate to serve a community that supports and prioritizes public safety.”

Ojai has also chosen its next police chief, who will also start in April.

Moorpark’s police station is located at 610 Spring Road. The main number is 805-532-2700.
