NEON“Anora” — which topped the Oscars with wins for Best Picture and Best Actress for Mikey Madison a week ago — received a small bump at the domestic box office this weekend.
Directed by Sean Baker, the R-rated Cinderella-like romantic comedy earned five Oscars at the 97th Academy Awards.
In addition to its wins for Best Picture and Best Actress for Madison, Baker won Oscars for Best Directing, Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing. Since Baker was one of the film’s three producers, he also won a statuette for Best Picture.
Per The Numbers, Anora expanded from 808 theaters last week to 1,938 North American venues this weekend. Deadline projects that Anora will earn $1.8 million in the Friday to Sunday frame, which will up its domestic tally to $18.4 million domestically.
Coupled with the film’s international take, The Numbers reported that Anora has earned $46.2 million to date against a $6 million production budget before prints and advertising costs.
Variety reported that Anora’s studio, Neon, spent $18 million on the film’s marketing, distribution and awards season campaign.
Anora was the only film that enjoyed any Oscars success that made it into the domestic box office top 10 this weekend.
‘Anora’ Will Soon Be Released On Streaming Video On Demand
Following its nationwide opening in theaters in November, Anora pivoted to digital streaming via premium video on demand on Dec. 17.
Per Neon, the film’s next stop in the home entertainment market will be on streaming video on demand on Hulu on March 17.
Prior to the Oscars, Anora’s awards season run was hit-and-miss. Anora won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May, which was followed by Best Picture honors from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Boston Society of Film Critics.
And while the film was shut out at the Golden Globes, Anora made a surprising Awards season comeback after winning Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards and Producers Guild Awards. In addition, Baker won Best Director honors for the film at the Directors Guild of America Awards and Anora was named Best Feature at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
While Conclave won Best Feature at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Film Awards, Madison pulled an upset win over The Substance star Demi Moore at the BAFTAs for Best Actress. Moore, however, took the Best Actress trophy at the SAG Awards.
Anora is playing in theaters and is currently available on PVOD ahead of its SVOD release on Hulu on March 17.
