LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – MARCH 29: WBO women’s welterweight champion Mikaela Mayer (L) and Sandy … More
Getty ImagesMikaela Mayer’s goal before facing Sandy Ryan in a rematch was to send the former champ to the hospital. While Mayer failed to meet her objective, the defending champion made a statement nonetheless.
Mayer’s adjustments in this meeting were to up her aggression and output. The result was that where the two were separated by a single punch in the first meeting, Mayer handily outworked Ryan in the rematch. She also landed with more power throughout the fight, never really allowing Ryan to lead the dance until the later rounds when Mayer’s gas tank began to dwindle.
Ryan was a game opponent for the champ, but the pressure Mayer applied from the start of the contest put the former champ on her back foot. Ryan stayed active and in the fight, but she could not make the needed adjustments to deal with everything Mayer threw her way.
After the win, Mayer said her goal was to meet Lauren Price in a unification match. Price holds the IBF, WBA, and WBC titles. Price is coming off a March 7 decision win over Natasha Jonas. She won the WBC and IBF titles in that contest.

Brian Norman Jr. Vs. Derrieck Cuevas
Brian Norman Jr. won the vacant WBO interim title in May 2024 with a 10th-round knockout over Giovani Santillan. Norman was promoted to full WBO champ in August when Terence Crawford moved up to junior middleweight. Norman was set to defend that title in November against Derrieck Cuevas, but that fight was delayed until Saturday night after Norman suffered an injured left hand. That hand was clearly fully healed as he used it to hurt Cuevas in the second round of their fight before ending things in the third round after Cuevas elected not to continue after getting knocked down and receiving a standing eight count.
With the stoppage in his first title defense, the 24-year-old Norman became the first fighter to knock down Cuevas.
Bruce Carrington vs. Jose Enrique Vivas
Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington entered Saturday’s boxing card ranked inside the top four by the WBO, IBF, WBC, and WBA. He made quick work of his opponent, Jose Enrique Vivas, who had never been stopped before. The 27-year-old set up the stoppage perfectly. Carrington allowed Vivas to get confident and comfortable early in the fight. That approach worked well as Vivas pushed Carrington to the ropes where Vivas got caught with a combination that left him on shaky legs for the last minute of the second stanza. With his opponent hurt, Carrington upped his offense, bringing about the third-round stoppage.
After the win. Carrington called out Nick Ball and Stephen Fulton.
Emiliano Fernando Vargas vs. Giovannie Gonzalez
Emiliano Fernando Vargas made a statement on Saturday night. The soon-to-be 20-year-old was fast and powerful from the opening of his fight against an outmatched Giovannie Gonzalez. His left hand was effective from the start of the bout. Vargas, the son of former champ Fernando Vargas, who was in his son’s corner, for this short contest. Vargas used his right hand to stun Gonzalez in the second stanza, and then, with his opponent not expecting it, Vargas uncorked a powerful left that put Gonzalez on his back with no chance of recovery.
Vargas moves to 13-0 with 11 knockout victories with the win.
Delante Johnson Vs. Kendo Castaneda
The 26-year-old Delante Johnson picked up an impressive stoppage on Saturday night against a game Kendo Castaneda. Johnson, a 2020 Olympian, used fast, snapping jabs to the head and body early in the fight. He also showed good power with his back hand. As the fight wore on, Johnson found openings for heavy body shots, one of which had Castaneda hurt late in the fourth round. Still, he could not finish Castaneda because he briefly took his foot off the gas while also looking to land to Castaneda’s head instead of returning to the body, something his corner chastised him for before the fifth stanza.
Johnson showed patience and smarts early in the fifth. He did not get too aggressive. Instead, he fought behind a jab but looked to land his body shots, which he did when he began to unload combos. One of those combos put Castaneda to a knee in the fifth. When Castaneda got back to his feet, he did not stay there long, as Johnson ended the contest not long after the first knockdown.
With the win, Johnson moves to 15-0 with seven knockouts.
Dedrick Crocklem Vs. Dionne Ruvalcaba
Dedrick Crocklem picked up a first-round stoppage in his second pro fight, which came a bit early. The 20-year-old Crocklem was all offense for as long as the fight lasted. While Crocklem got the win, he still needs some seasoning. Crocklem showed good speed and volume but seemed to lack power on his punches. He also threw his hooks very wide and fought behind a bit of a low defensive guard. Yes, he had success against the overmatched Dionne Ruvalcaba, but it’ll be interesting to see him matched up against someone who might be able to take advantage of his developing style.
Emmanuel Chance Vs. Miguel Guzman
Emmanuel Chance looked good in his pro debut on Saturday night. The 18-year-old from New Jersey opened the card with a strong performance. Chance, who signed with Top Rank earlier this year, showed a lot of aggression to open the fight, pushing forward and throwing everything with full power as he moved his opponent, Miguel Guzman, to the ropes. Not long after that, things settled down when the fighters moved to the middle of the ring, but Chance continued to throw mostly power punches.
Guzman gave Chance a different look in the second stanza, opening up a bit. Still, his offense mostly allowed Chance to work on his timing, head movement, and moving between offense and defense.
Chance needs to work a bit on mixing things up and adding more jabs to his arsenal. He could also use some work on his offense in close, but overall, Chance looked very good in his pro debut.

Mayer Vs. Ryan Rivalry And Controversy
According to ESPN, in June 2024, Mayer said on social media that Ryan had turned down a fight with her. Ryan, at the time, the WBO women’s welterweight champion, replied, “I’ll fight you any time and any day of the week drama queen. But when the offer was terrible for me to defend my belt and you come with nothing I was advised differently by my team.”
There was also some animosity between the two because Ryan had begun to work with trainers Kay Koroma and Flick Savoy, who had previously worked with Mayer.
Not long after the social media exchange, the two agreed to fight in September.
On fight night, someone threw red paint on Ryan as she left her New York City hotel to head to Madison Square Garden for the fight.
“A hit and run or whatever you want to call it. A guy got out of his car and threw a can of paint on me about three hours before I was about to get into the ring. It disturbed a little bit of the preparation,” Ryan said of the incident.
“But we just went ahead. I’m a fighter at the end of the day. So I got on with the fight. I’d done a full camp in Las Vegas already so I wasn’t going home without finishing the job.
“With regards to my performance, I didn’t rate it but that was because of me fighting with aggression, too much of it, just constantly coming forward, not bothering about what was coming back at all.
“The result, it was close enough that you couldn’t really argue either way.”
After the fight, Ryan wrote on social media.
“Obviously, the paint attack has received a lot of coverage, but I was also subjected to a disgusting and pathetic smear campaign on fight day where hundreds of leaflets featuring my image and defamatory text were distributed and posted on the streets surrounding my hotel and Madison Square Garden both before and after the fight,” Ryan wrote in that statement.
“ESPN had me winning by two rounds [ESPN’s Kriegel scored it 96-94 in favor of Ryan] and I know many other respected boxing observers also had me winning the fight. In light of everything that’s happened, I believe that an immediate rematch should be ordered.
“Boxing deserves so much more than this kind of thuggery.”
Bob Arum And Eddie Hearn On Mayer Vs. Ryan 2 Fight Card
NEW YORK, NEW YORK – SEPTEMBER 27: Mikaela Mayer (green trunks) trades punches with Sandy Ryan of … More
Getty Images“The rivalry between Mikaela Mayer and Sandy Ryan is one of the fiercest we’ve seen in recent years, and both are determined to put it to rest once and for all,” says Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum. “Brian Norman Jr. faces a tough first defense, but I’m confident he’ll rise to the occasion and prove he belongs at the top. Bruce Carrington is close to a world title shot, and this fight is his chance to cement his place in line.”
“I’m delighted that Sandy has a second chance in Las Vegas,” says Matchroom Chairman Eddie Hearn. “The rivalry between the pair spilled over in New York, and there’s certainly no love lost between them. But when they got in the ring at Madison Square Garden, they delivered one of the fights of the year for 2024.
“Although Mikaela got the nod last time, it was a pick’em fight with only a coat of paint to separate them. I’m confident that it will be revenge, not repeat, on March 29, and Sandy will be crowned a two-time world champion.”
Mikaela Mayer On Sandy Ryan
“I’ve never been one to shy away from challenges. I could have taken my belt and moved on, but it was a highly entertaining fight, and if this is what the fans want, then that’s what I’ll give them,” Mayer said. “I have stayed in the gym and am getting better every day. It will be worse for Sandy this time, but regardless, expect another action-packed fight.”
Sandy Ryan on Mikaela Mayer
“As crazy as this sounds after what happened last time in New York, I am actually looking forward to returning to the U.S.,” Ryan said. “I’ve had some remarkable, history-making fights here already, so the opportunity to come back and showcase my talent while headlining in the fight capital of the world is amazing.
“This time, I will be fully prepared for whatever comes my way. I’m not making any excuses, but after what happened before the fight last time, I did fight in anger, and it clearly affected my performance. But it was a great fight and did great numbers for ESPN, so that’s why Mayer had to take this rematch. It’s the biggest fight for both of us, and everyone wants to see it again. On March 29, the world will see a focused, determined, and talented fighter in the shape of her life, and I will reclaim my world title.
“I want to thank my promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom, my manager Brian Peters, and Bob Arum for getting the rematch done. It will be another amazing fight for women’s boxing and boxing in general, and I look forward to reclaiming my title.”
