Mercer Island police identified two suspects involved in a hate crime at Islander Middle School, according to an update from the department.

On January 1, two individuals trespassed onto the school campus and defaced the exterior of the building with antisemitic and racist symbols and phrases.

Authorities are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Just hours after their initial release of the suspects photos, Mercer Island police say that tips from the public led to their identification.

“Detectives will continue working on this case and updates will be provided when available. Thank you to our community for helping aid in this investigation,” the updated release said.

Police released descriptions of both suspects.

The first individual was wearing camouflaged pants, and a black balaclava covering his nose and mouth, and a “Paradise Varsity Bomber Jacket,” manufactured by PacSun.

The second suspect was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored sweatpants. He also had either a red face mask or bandana covering his nose and mouth.

Surveillance photos of both suspects were also taken without face coverings.
