The man found guilty of murder after shooting and killing a man sleeping in his car in Beale Park was sentenced to 80 years to life in prison Tuesday.
Tyequez Shamar Baker, 25, was found guilty of first-degree murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of ammunition as a prohibited person on Aug. 20.
Baker was accused of killing Glenn Earl Henderson Jr., 26, who was sleeping in his car in Beale Park at 500 Oleander Ave. at around 7:30 a.m. Sept. 14, 2020. According to a Kern County District Attorney’s Office news release, Baker shot Henderson in his car five times.
Henderson suffered gunshot wounds to his neck, head and chest, the DA’s Office said.
According to the DA’s Office, Baker faced multiple life sentences.
Baker was 20 years old when he shot Henderson. Baker will appear in court again April 8 for a Franklin hearing, in which he could request a mitigation on his sentence as he was under the age of 26 while committing the crime and received a lengthy sentence for his conviction.
Baker also has another sentencing set for April 8 for a different case that was filed against him Sept. 8, 2020, in the same month as the shooting. He pleaded no contest to inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant Jan. 14, and the other three felony charges — assault with a firearm on a person, attempted murder and possession of a firearm as a felon — were dismissed, according to Kern County Superior Court records.
Baker is being held in custody with no bail.
