A 63-year-old man was killed early Monday morning in a hit-and-run accident on Spirit Lake Road in Winter Haven early Monday morning.
Polk County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to 3305 Spirit Lake Road, north of Thornhill Road, about 2:29 a.m. Monday.
Upon arriving, first responders, including Polk County Fire Rescue, attempted life-saving measures but the man died from his injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office said the man’s identity has not been released, as deputies are still working to notify his family.
The driver whose vehicle struck the man fled the scene prior to first responders’ arrival. Detectives do not have a description of the vehicle.

Detectives think the man was walking or standing in the northbound travel land of Spirit Lake Road at the time he was hit, the Sheriff’s Office said. The crash scene is well lit, but the man was wearing dark clothing.
The roadway was closed for around three hours during an investigation.
