Did The Earthquake Impact Oscar After Parties?

While the earthquake occurred a hours after the awards show concluded, several Hollywood stars were still out and celebrating at afterparties. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Chappell Roan was performing at the the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards watch party when the temblor hit, however, no one appeared to notice. The reported added that shaking was felt by attendees at the Governors Ball post-Oscars event but there were no disruptions.

Tangent

Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony took place less than two months after Los Angeles county was devastated by a series of major wildfires. The fires caused 29 fatalities and burned through around 57,670 acres of land across Los Angeles county and neighboring Ventura county. During his monologue, Oscars host Conan O’Brien invited members of the Los Angeles and Pasadena fire departments. Like with other major entertainment awards ceremonies, taking place in Los Angeles over the past month, the firefighters received a standing ovation from the audience.

Crucial Quote

During his opening monologue, O’Brien diverged briefly from his usual comedic self to address the people of Los Angeles who have “been through a devastating ordeal.” The former talk show host said: “Any award show can seem self indulgent and superfluous, but what I want to do is have us all remember why we gathered here tonight. Okay, yes, we will honor many beautiful and talented A-list stars. The Oscars also shines a light on an incredible community of people you will never see craftspeople, artisans, technicians, men and women behind the camera, who have devoted their lives to making films. Many people we celebrate tonight are not famous, they’re not wealthy, but they are devoted to a craft they can, in moments, bring us all together.”
