During his lifetime, Mac Miller was hugely successful on the Billboard charts. He shocked the industry more than a decade ago when his debut album Blue Slide Park hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, which was an incredibly rare showing for any independent musician. All of his projects have enjoyed lofty debuts, though none of them had reached one tally…until now.
Miller earns his first appearance on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart this week. Years after his death, the popular rapper finally lands on the list of the most-streamed full-lengths and EPs in the nation with his latest posthumous offering.
Balloonerism debuts at No. 4 on the streaming-only roster. The set, which was released in late January, doesn’t only bring Miller to the Billboard tally for the first time, but it earns him his inaugural top 10 hit.
The Top Streaming Albums chart didn’t exist during Miller’s lifetime, so it’s not too surprising that he had never landed on the list before this week. The fact that he earns his first placement with a top five smash does underline how popular the hip-hop musician remains to this day.
Miller passed away unexpectedly in September 2018 from an overdose. Since then, his estate has released two albums, Circles, in 2020, and Balloonerism. Both have become top 10s on the Billboard 200, and the latest of the two is new to the highest tier on quite a few rankings in America.
Balloonerism debuts at No. 1 on three of the six Billboard charts it reaches this frame. The set dominates the Top Album Sales, Vinyl Albums, and Top Rap Albums rankings. He’s already conquered all of those lists in the past, and in the case of the vinyl-only roster, he’s done so six times.
The same posthumous set is also a top 10 win on several other rankings. Balloonerism kicks off its time on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at No. 2, and one rung further south on the Billboard 200. In its first full tracking frame, the title moved 81,500 equivalent units, according to Luminate. Almost exactly half of those units were pure purchases.
