L.A.’s the place for Khalil Mack.
The Los Angeles Chargers’ star outside linebacker agreed to an one-year, $18 million deal to remain with the team. The deal is guaranteed, as first reported by the NFL Network.
Mack, 34, enters his fourth season with the Chargers’ of his stellar 12-year career by taking a $1.2 million pay cut from 2024, according to Spotrac. The pending free agent decided to run it back with L.A. and a unit which last season allowed the fewest points per game (17.7).
His return comes on the heels of the Chargers releasing Joey Bosa, another Pro Bowl outside linebacker.
The tandem of Mack and Bosa was productive, although it lacked the impact L.A. envisioned as Bosa’s durability didn’t match Mack’s.
The pair accounted for more than 20 percent of the Chargers’ cap space last year, with Bosa consuming a team-high $26.1 million and Mack, $25.5 million.
The Chargers saved $25.3 million by releasing Bosa, although he’ll cost $11.1 million toward this year’s cap.
Mack, a three-time All-Pro with 107.5 career sacks, set the franchise’s single-season sack record at 17 in 2023. He had six sacks last season, his 10th straight year with at least that many.
L.A. also cut running back Gus Edwards, declining the second-year of his $650,000 deal. Edwards will count $1.1 million against the cap.
The Chargers are in an enviable position regarding their cap space. The $93.8 million at L.A.’s disposal is the second only to the New England Patriots ($122.4 million) in the NFL.
