The Los Angeles Chargers are going global next season, chosen by the NFL to be part of its International Series by playing in Sao Paula, Brazil.
The Chargers, who are no stranger to competing abroad, will learn their opponent for the Sept. 5 game at the Corinthians Arena when the league’s schedule is released this spring.
This will be the Chargers’ eighth international game and their fourth regular-season game.
The Chargers, then hailing from San Diego, played the first NFL game outside of North America against the then-St. Louis Cardinals in 1976 in Tokyo during the preseason.
About 20 years later the Chargers became a regular in the American Bowl series, from 1996-99, in playing the New York Giants (Berlin, 1994), the Pittsburgh Steelers (Tokyo, 1996) and the Denver Broncos (Sydney, 1999).
L.A. played the Kansas City Chiefs in Mexico City in 2019 in their last international affair.
“Its’s an honor to once again represent the the NFL on an international stage,’’ A.G. Spanos, the Chargers President of Business Operations, said in a statement. ”It’s also a tremendous opportunity to help grow the game and bring the Chargers brand to millions of sports fans across Brazil and Latin America.”

The Chargers seek to improve by shoring up their offensive line and obtaining reliable wide receivers for standout quarterback Justin Herbert.
On defense, the team features two stellar edge rushers in Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa, although there is no guarantee they’ll both be headed to Brazil.
