Liverpool Fans Can Get Carried Away But Focus Remains Under ‘Unbelievable’ Slot

Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson says the players are focused on the task ahead as the team sits at the top of the Premier League table, but is glad the club’s fans are getting carried away.

Liverpool came back from a goal down to defeat Leicester City on Boxing Day, and Robertson played his part in his the 3-1 win which sees his team continue its charge towards the title.

Arne Slot’s side is now six points clear at the top ahead of second-place Arsenal, and also has a game in hand.

Mohamed Salah managed to get his name on the scoresheet again after Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones had scored either side of halftime to give Liverpool the lead after it went behind to a Jordan Ayew goal early on.

“I’ve always said when we’ve been in fortunate positions of leading the league if our fans are getting carried away then we’re doing good things on the pitch,” Robertson told Premier League Productions.

“Allow them to get carried away. I’ve been a fan before—obviously loving football—and if you’re getting carried away then it means the team are doing well.

“But we [players] certainly won’t [get carried away]. We know we’re in a busy period and we’ve got really tough games coming up.

“We’ve got West Ham away, who are in a good moment, in three days’ time and our focus is on that.

“We’ll let the fans have a drink tonight and celebrate the win but we’ll be straight home to recover and get ready for West Ham.”

When asked about the differences between the approach of previous manager Jürgen Klopp and the current setup, Robertson provided an insight into Slot’s preparation methods and the standards he demands from his players.

“He tweaks our role every single game really, depending on who we’re playing, how they set up, and how we want to set up,” said Robertson.

“We have different positions and different roles within every game. Tactically he’s unbelievable, him and his staff.

“Credit to the lads, we’ve bought right into it. We’ve put a lot of work in, on and off the pitch, and I think we’re seeing the rewards just now.

“We have to keep pushing because the manager demands more from us and I don’t think we’re quite perfect in his eyes yet and that’s what we want.

“So we have to keep pushing and keep doing better, and hopefully if we do that we’ll win a lot more games.”

Liverpool travels to the English capital on Sunday to face West Ham United whose fellow Londoners, Chelsea and Arsenal, will be hoping the East Enders can do them a favor by causing an upset.

Slot’s side has only lost once so far this season, at home to Nottingham Forest back in September.

Forest has since shown that display was no fluke as it is the next closest team to Liverpool in the table after Arsenal and Chelsea, sitting fourth just a point behind Chelsea.

Liverpool’s new boss has his players well drilled, on and off the pitch, so when asked about winning the league, they remind the media nothing is won in December.

As Robertson says, though, they are happy for the fans to get carried away, as that is what the game is all about.
