Apple TV+ is remaining in the K-pop music business.
Following the arrival of the docuseries K-Pop Idols in August, which offers a backstage snapshot of artists in the K-pop music genre, the streamer has announced a music competition series called KPOPPED. It stars Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion and South Korean rapper, singer, and songwriter PSY.
From singer and producer Lionel Richie, who has sat in one of the judging chairs on ABC’s American Idol since 2018, and Miky Lee, the South Korean-born American business executive serving as vice-chairman of CJ Group, KPOPPED, according to the logline, will feature “western icons reimagine one of their biggest hits, collaborating with top-tier K-pop idols to deliver spectacular battle performances, with a live Seoul-based audience picking the winner of the best new K-popped song.”
Apple TV+’s interest in K-pop, of course, should come as no surprise. What began as musical subculture known as Korean Pop, nicknamed K-pop, in South Korea during the 1990s, has transformed into a global cultural phenomenon. According to a report by Allied Market Research, the K-pop events market is projected to reach 20 billion dollars by 2031.
Music-themed competition series, meanwhile, remain a staple on television. The Voice just returned for its for its 27th edition on NBC. American Idol on ABC will open season 23 on March 9 at 8 p.m. ET. And the genre overall continues to roll out new entries, with KPOPPED the latest entry.
Eight episodes of KPOPPED have been ordered. The start date has not been announced at press time.
