A Real Pain—an acclaimed comedy drama starring Jessie Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin—is new on streaming this week.
Also written and directed by Eisenberg, A Real Pain was released in theaters on Nov. 1.
The logline for A Real Pain reads, “Mismatched cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Culkin) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd-couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.”
Rated R, A Real Pain also stars Will Sharpe, Jennifer Grey, Kurt Egyiawan, Liza Sadovy and Daniel Oreskes.
Per When to Stream, A Real Pain is expected to arrive on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Dec. 31. A Searchlight Pictures release, A Real Pain is expected to be available on such digital platforms as Prime Video, AppleTV and VUDU. Deadline also reported on the Dec. 31 release date.
Purchase or rental pricing information for A Real Pain is not yet available. Typically digital purchase prices for new films on PVOD run anywhere from $19.99 to $29.99, while digital rental prices run anywhere from $14.99 to $24.99.
How Did Audiences And Critics Receive ‘A Real Pain’?
According to The Numbers, A Real Pain has earned $7.6 million in domestic ticket sales and $1.1 million in international ticket sales for a worldwide take of $8.7 million to date.
Deadline reports that A Real Pain had a production budget of $3 million before prints and advertising.
Rotten Tomatoes critics collectively gave A Real Pain a 95% “fresh” rating based on 207 reviews.
The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Led by a scene-stealing turn from Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain is a powerfully funny, emotionally resonant dramedy that finds writer-director-star Jesse Eisenberg playing to his strengths on either side of the camera.”
A Real Pain also received an 82% rating on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 500-plus verified user ratings.
A Real Pain has attracted a fair amount of attention from journalists this awards season, earning Best Picture nominations from the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes (in the Musical or Comedy) categories.
Kieran Culkin has also received Best Supporting Actor nominations from both organizations, which also nominated Eisenberg for Best Screenplay for the film.
Eisenberg also earned a Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy nomination from the Golden Globes.
Also playing in theaters, A Real Pain is expected to debut on PVOD on Tuesday.
