The ‘John Wick’ Movie Franchise Kicked Off In 2014
The first of four John Wick movies to date was released in 2014 with John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves, of course, in the title role. Released on Oct. 24, 2014, John Wick earned $87.7 million worldwide against a $30 million budget before prints and advertising costs, which was enough to justify a sequel.
As such, John Wick: Chapter 2 was released on Feb. 10, 2017, and earned $171.5 million worldwide against a $40 million budget before P&A. From there, the franchise continued to explode in popularity, as John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, released on May 17, 2019, earned $326.6 million at the worldwide box office before P&A.
The most recent film in the franchise, John Wick: Chapter 4, which was released on March 24, 2023, had a global take of $440.3 million before P&A.
The movie saga will continue on June 6 with the release of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, a spinoff film starring Ana de Armas and Reeves in a supporting role.
While Reeves’ iconic character seemingly perished at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate is finding a way to bring the character back to life for at least one more film.
During CinemaCon in April, Lionsgate announced that a fifth John Wick movie was in the works, as well as an animated prequel and a spinoff movie featuring John Wick 4’s assassin character, Caine (Donnie Yen), Variety reported.
Wick is Pain will arrive on PVOD on Friday.
